Spray of Applied Materials (Adhesives, Paint, Finishes, Fixatives) Policy

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to outline clear expectations and guidelines for the RISD campus community to help mitigate damage to property and keep the community safe.

Scope

This policy applies to RISD faculty, staff, students, and all others engaged in RISD programming.

Policy Statement

The Rhode Island School of Design prepares artists and designers through its strong undergraduate and graduate programs. We take pride in our facilities, and we expect all members of our community to treat them with respect. This policy covers what is expected from community members when using Aerosol products (including but not limited to paint, adhesives, and finishes) while on campus. Please note that additional guidelines, such as Residence Life policies regarding the proper use of materials, may be communicated at the department level. When guidance is given on a departmental level, those specific guidelines that are more stringent than those outlined in this policy supersede these general guidelines. Questions about using these or other materials should be directed to Environmental Health and Safety at 401-454-6780/ ehs@risd.edu, RISD Facilities, and/or the department governing the specific use location.

Policy

Aerosol Use Overall:Aerosol cans for disposal are considered hazardous waste and must be put into designated hazardous waste collection bins, not “regular/solid waste” trash bins/containers. Community members should also be aware of the inherent fire risk when using aerosols and not spraying next to open flames, heat sources, etc.

Use in Interior Spaces: The spray booths located in workrooms and classrooms/studio spaces are the ONLY APPROVED interior areas in buildings for the application of spray or other applied adhesives, paint, fixatives, or other finishes.

Use in Exterior Spaces: NO spray or applied materials are to be used directly on the exterior property of RISD or on any public property. This includes grass, interior of the first-year quad, landscaped areas, paved areas, parking, loading areas, sidewalks or any other exterior surface. RISD understands that there may be times when projects are too large to fit into the spray booths and need to be taken outside of those buildings for completion. In this scenario, the student(s), staff, and faculty needing to use aerosol outside of a spray booth MUST ensure proper precautions are taken to mitigate damage and health risks to the community. This includes but is not limited to protecting the area under and around the item being sprayed (with a tarp, drop cloth, or other protected material such as large pieces of paper - big enough to protect the surface supplied by the person wishing to do the spraying), and ensuring that they are not in areas where any toxic fumes or materials can reasonably get into any building avoiding a health hazard, see the Indoor Air Quality Policy. Drying time should also be considered when spraying outside a spray booth so the work doesn't outgas (dry) inside, releasing solvent emissions into the building. Students, staff, and faculty who cause damage to exterior surfaces, whether or not they took steps to mitigate the damage, will be responsible for the cost of cleaning and/or repair by RISD-authorized professionals, see the Posting Policy.

Spray Booths: It is expected that ALL spray or applied materials, whether adhesives, paint, or other finishes, are to occur in campus spray booths located in the following areas:
