Smoke-Free Campus Policy

Purpose

This policy outlines Rhode Island School of Design’s (“RISD”) prohibitions regarding smoking of any kind in or near RISD property.

Scope

This policy applies to all RISD faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Policy

For reasons of public health and in compliance with Rhode Island law, smoking conventional tobacco products, e-cigarettes and cannabis are prohibited in any building owned or managed by RISD, including but not limited to classrooms, studios, hallways, residential facilities and buildings, restrooms, the Library, the Museum, and dining facilities. Smoking is also prohibited within RISD-owned or leased vehicles. The sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products is prohibited on campus.

Procedures

Individuals smoking conventional tobacco products or e-cigarettes, outside RISD buildings, must maintain a distance of 35 feet, or about 11 meters, away from exits, entrance ways and windows to ensure the prevention of smoke migration into any RISD building.

Any questions you may have regarding this policy should be directed to the Environmental Health and Safety Manager. Any problems should be referred to the appropriate department head or supervisor.

Policy Sanctions

RISD reserves the right to review alleged violations of this policy in conjunction with other appropriate offices and under other applicable College policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements, including but not limited to those listed under Related Policies. Failure to comply with this policy and other Related Policies is subject to disciplinary action and sanctions per applicable disciplinary procedures.
