Holiday Policy

Scope

Regular full-time employees and part-time employees scheduled to work at least 910 hours/year, including employees in the Orientation and Review period, are entitled to paid holidays in accordance with this policy.

Policy

RISD officially observes a number of paid holidays throughout the year. A holiday schedule is posted each year.

For the purposes of this policy, the hours paid for individual holidays are determined by taking the employee’s scheduled weekly hours in the Workday system, divided by 5. For example, an employee scheduled to work 35 hours per week will receive 7 hours of pay for designated holidays. An employee scheduled to work 20 hours per week will receive 4 hours of pay for designated holidays.

RISD recognizes the following days as paid holidays:

  • Independence Day
  • Flexible Holiday*
  • Labor Day
  • Indigenous Peoples Day (formerly Columbus Day)
  • Veterans Day*
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Eve
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year’s Eve
  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth

* In order to allow RISD to close for the winter break (December 24th through January 1st), the observation of some regularly scheduled holidays may be deferred to this week. Pay for deferred holidays is based on the employee’s standard hours and hourly rate of pay at the time the holiday is observed by RISD. Employees must be actively employed on the date a deferred holiday is observed in order to receive Holiday pay.

A non-exempt employee who is required to work on an observed holiday is paid time and one half their hourly rate for all hours actually worked in addition to holiday pay at the regular hourly rate.

An exempt employee who is required to work on a holiday may be eligible for an alternate day off at the discretion of their supervisor.

Certain areas of the college follow a modified holiday schedule to meet the needs of their operation. In those instances, an alternate holiday schedule will be announced to affected employees.
