Orientation and Review Period

Purpose

The orientation and review period is intended to provide employees with an opportunity to transition into their new position and at the same time afford RISD the opportunity to evaluate the new employee’s acclimation to the College.

Scope

The orientation and review period of six months for regular exempt staff, and three months for regular non-exempt staff, applies to newly hired staff and those transferring into a new position.

Policy

This orientation and review period enables the supervisor to evaluate the employee’s progress in meeting the expectations of the position and allows the employee to determine if the position suits their interest and needs. If the supervisor’s assessment is that the employee has not performed to expectations, employment may be terminated with or without notice. Alternatively, the supervisor, with the approval of Human Resources, may extend the orientation and review period as appropriate under the circumstances.

Employees accrue vacation, sick, and personal days from the beginning of employment, but may not use paid time off during the first three months of employment unless approval is obtained from their supervisor, and Human Resources is notified before the time is used.
