Definitions
The definition of immediate family includes:
- spouse / domestic partner
- children
- parents
- siblings
- grandparents
- grandchildren
- in-laws (grandparents, parents, siblings, and children)
- step relationships in all the noted categories
Policy
In the event of the death of an immediate family member, employees may take up to 3 working days off with pay, per occurrence.
Part-time employees who regularly work a minimum of 17.5 hours per week, totaling 910 hours per year, are allowed paid bereavement leave on a prorated basis. Additional time off may be granted without pay at the discretion of the employee’s supervisor.
Employees may take up to one half day of paid bereavement leave to attend the funeral or services of other close friends/relatives.
Except in very unusual circumstances, bereavement leave must be utilized within 7 days of the date of death.
