Rhode Island School of Design is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) is a voluntary, non-governmental membership association that serves as an institutional accreditor and promotes educational excellence and quality assurance to its member institutions. Members are degree granting post-secondary educational institutions offering higher education and located inside or outside the United States, including, but not limited to, the States of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. NECHE currently accredits over 200 institutions across the globe.

RISD’s most recent comprehensive accreditation review was conducted in 2016.

RISD is also a participating member in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), which ensures efficient, consistent, and effective regulation of distance education programs.

Some professional degree programs are additionally accredited by discipline-specific accrediting agencies.

The Master of Arts in Teaching is accredited by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE)
